In the early morning of April 28, Beijing time, at the East Coast track and field competition in Florida, USA, after nearly two years, Su Bingtian, the Asian men's 100-meter record holder, re-stood on the 100-meter track.

In the men's 100m trapeze battle, Su Bingtian ran 10.50 seconds to rank fifth in the group, and ranked 29th overall. People are happy to see Su Bingtian's comeback, but they are also worried about whether Su Bingtian can still catch the last train of the Paris Olympics?

I haven't run for two years, is "Su Shen" okay?

Since the Tokyo Olympics, Su Bingtian has been plagued by injuries. According to his own disclosure, he has been hit by the new crown pneumonia twice, and his motor function has been affected. Although the index screening is normal, it is still very uncomfortable during training, and I feel that the muscle strength cannot be improved when exerting force.

In June 2023, Su Bingtian gave up the 2023 season ahead of schedule and withdrew from the World Championships and the Asian Games successively. In addition to athletes, Su Bingtian's status as an associate professor at the School of Physical Education of Jinan University and vice chairman of the Chinese Athletics Association also allows Su Bingtian to participate in various social activities outside the arena.

The last time Su Bingtian participated in the 100m event was at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, when he had just recovered from the coronavirus, he ran 10.15 seconds in the preliminaries and 10.30 seconds in the semifinals and missed the final.

In February 2024, Su Bingtian finally ushered in his season debut, and in the final of the 60m of the National Indoor Track and Field Grand Prix (Chengdu Station), Su Bingtian ran 6.66 seconds to win the second place. That's not a small gap from the Asian record of 6.42 seconds set by himself in 2018 in this event in 2018.

Go to the Paris Olympics, and these methods

Due to the early end of the 2023 season, Su Bingtian's name is no longer in the men's 100-meter world ranking on the official website of the World Athletics Federation.

In accordance with the requirements for participation in the Paris Olympic Games, the shortlist will be determined based on world rankings and results as of 30 June 2024. If Su Bingtian wants to participate in the men's 100m race, there are only two ways, one is to run 10 seconds in a 100m race during the Olympic qualification period, and the other is to arrange 10 races in the outdoor season in April and May this year and get five valid points.

Of course, if he can't participate in the 100-meter "flying man battle", Su Bingtian may still appear on the stage of the Paris Olympics as a member of the Chinese men's relay team.

At present, it is very difficult to say whether Su Bingtian can meet the criteria for participating in the Paris Olympics. The soon-to-be-36-year-old has not competed in an official competition for nearly two years. His current time of 10.50 seconds is not far from the 10.15 seconds he ran in 2022, and it seems to be a big challenge to get back to the form he was in at the Tokyo Olympics.

However, as early as 2019, Su Bingtian also suffered a major injury in his career, resulting in mediocre results and missing many races, but in the end, he set a new record at the Tokyo Olympics and created a miracle on the 100-meter track.

In an interview in December last year, Su Bingtian said that the most important race at the moment is the Bahamas World Relay in May, because this race is related to whether the Chinese relay team can directly qualify for the Olympics.

"First make sure you can stick to it, then make yourself eligible for the 2025 competition, then try to qualify for the individual events, and then think more about the rankings. ”

In October last year, Su Bingtian was asked if he would continue to persevere, and he replied at the time, "I will definitely continue to run, but whether I can participate in the Olympics is unknown." The Olympics do not mean that you can participate in the Olympics if you have run 9.83 seconds in the past, there needs to be a standard, for example, if you want to participate in the 100m event, you must run 10 seconds, or you can compete by points. In addition, I can participate in the Paris Olympics through the relay event, but I would prefer to be able to make the national team through the 100m event and participate in the Paris Olympics. ”
